FOLLOW YOUR GUIDE

FOLLOW YOUR GUIDE

Have you ever been on a guided tour? A guided tour seems a little unnecessary for a trip to the local park, but when your trip is up into the mountains or someplace where there can be danger or the risk of getting lost, a guide for the tour is very comforting. Why? Because the guide knows the safe paths. Have you ever been on a guided tour? Have you ever been on a guided tour? A guided tour seems a little unnecessary for a trip to the local park, but when your trip is up into the mountains or someplace where there can be danger or the risk of getting lost, a guide for the tour is very comforting. Why? Because the guide knows the safe paths.

This is why I’m so thankful for ‘The Guide.’ When Jesus died on the cross in order to pay the price for sin, He rose again and defeated death. His resurrection made it very clear that we are to calibrate our compasses to that which is beyond this life, that which is eternal. But He did not leave us here to try to figure it out on our own. Jesus sent us a guide, the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, ‘I will pray to the Father, and He will give you another helper, that He may abide with you forever. (John 14:16).

So now we have been sent a Guide who knows the way, and knows it perfectly. He is able to counsel us, convict us, direct us, teach us, and lead us in the way we should go. When our feelings tell us that one path looks nice or fun, He is able to warn us and show us the right way. His standard is truth, and He bears witness to that truth in our hearts through the Word of God. He leads us in ways that both challenge us and fulfill us. He always points us to Christ who completes us, and He causes us to become more Christ-like ourselves. When we are led by the Holy Spirit, life is exciting, purposeful, and we are secure. One thing we are NOT… our-selves. As Paul said, ‘it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me’ (Gal 2:20).

The subject of the Holy Spirit, as well as the role of the Holy Spirit, is so vast that we could talk about His role and His work all day but let us simply consider this… God has given us a guide for life, the Holy Spirit. It only makes sense that we should stop trying to figure out life for our-selves and learn to trust the Guide who was sent to lead us. He will lead us into all truth, if we let Him. He will cure our hearts of pride and selfishness if we will humble ourselves and follow His paths instead of our own. In this life, if you ‘follow your Guide’ you will find yourself enjoying the most breathtaking scenery on the most exciting paths and life will be both safer and more eventful as we bear the fruit of the Spirit in our lives (Gal 5:22-23). That’s the way of the Spirit-filled life. Let’s live it!
