Summertime is quickly slipping away! I remember when I was still homeschooling, July was the “cram time” for me. I began to feel the pressure of any detail that was not tied down by then; be it courses and materials, tutors, extracurriculars or peace. It was usually the things still undecided that kept me from peace, yet it was the most important thing I sought!
Last month, I attended the THSC Convention in The Woodlands. One of the first things that represented the element of peace to me, was the name of their convention “Called to Teach”. Anyone who has been homeschooling for an extended period of time, will understand the name. As I homeschooled my boys for 18 years, you better believe that I was called, lest I would have thrown in the towel many times over.
As I walked through the convention exhibitor hall and attended workshops, once again, I began to feel a sense of peace. Each person there was offering help to the homeschool parent. There were workshops, demonstrations and displays on how to get started, or clear the next hurdle, pick your curriculum, and learn how to use it. They also shared the importance of teaching your child to strive to be like Christ.
“Therefore shall ye lay up these My words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” Deut. 11:18-19
